Lifestyle factors that can create wrinkles

As one of the most unwanted signs of ageing, wrinkles are a common concern. In fact, either preventing or reducing the appearance of wrinkles is a key aim for most aesthetic products and procedures on the market. Anti-wrinkle injections are one of the most successful treatment options available. These even offer preventive action from the late 20’s to 30’s, as well as a reduction in wrinkle appearance from the late 30’s onwards. But for the best possible results, you will want to limit or restrict some lifestyle activities that can speed up the ageing process, and emphasize any facial wrinkles. So what are the lifestyle factors that can create wrinkles? And what kind of effect do these activities have on the development of wrinkles? Well, here at The Skin and Wellbeing Clinic, we are Preston’s leading aesthetic practitioners. From anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers, to dermaplaning and chemical peels, we can offer a number of high quality, professional, aesthetic procedures. As a result, we have produced this guide to everything you should know about the lifestyle factors that can have a negative impact on your skin.

What are the different lifestyle factors that can create wrinkles?

There are a number of different lifestyle factors that can lead to the development of wrinkles, and have a negative impact on your facial skin. These include:

  • Smoking
  • UV exposure
  • Stress

The connection between smoking and wrinkles

Smoking can have a direct influence on the formation of wrinkles, particularly those around the mouth. Vertical lines between the nose and the mouth can be more likely to appear, and appear in earlier years, for smokers. In fact, these are often nick-named smokers lines.

The smoking expression can also lead to an increase prominence in forehead lines and wrinkles too.

In addition, smoking can reduce the amount of oxygen available, to all areas of the body. This includes the skin. This can lead to an aged appearance, with skin discolouration and loss of tone.

UV exposure and the development of wrinkles

Over exposure to UV rays can lead to the development of wrinkles, as over time, the harmful UVA rays can cause the collagen and elastin to break down completely. This means that your skin can lose shape and elasticity, leading to sagging skin and the development of creases, lines and wrinkles.

UV exposure can also result in sun spots, or age spots, and areas of skin discolouration and damage.

Wrinkles can develop with stress

With increased stress levels comes an increase of cortisol in the body. This has a range of damaging and negative effects, including destroying collagen. Collagen is an essential part of your skin. This is responsible for providing structure and volume, especially to the facial skin. Without this, expression lines and wrinkles will begin to appear, or will become more prominent.

Stress is also associated with particularly strong facial expressions, like frowning. This can lead to the development of deep forehead lines, or lines around the eyes.
